Virender Sehwag's son Aaryavir smashed 173 runs off 143 deliveries for Delhi Under-19 against Chandigarh U19 in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy on Friday, producing an innings that carried unmistakable echoes of his father's swashbuckling style.
Like his father, the 18-year-old opened the batting in the 50-over game at the ACA Sports Complex in Vizianagaram and dominated the Chandigarh bowling attack. Leading from the front as Delhi's captain, Aaryavir scored 124 of his 173 runs solely through boundaries, striking 19 fours and eight sixes before being dismissed in the 46th over, 27 short of a double hundred.
A lone hand
The scale of the innings is underlined by how little support he received. He stitched a 98-run opening partnership in just 13.2 overs with Arnav Bugga, who made 47 off 39 balls, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals at the other end. Apart from Bugga, only two other batters reached double figures — Abhiraj Gagan Singh with 18 and Shantanu Yadav with an unbeaten 27 — as Delhi finished their 50 overs on 289.
The knock was also a breakthrough in consistency terms. Aaryavir had managed good starts without converting them in the ongoing tournament, registering scores of 54, 46 and 32 in his previous three matches. He had also turned out for India U19 last month in a three-ODI series against Australia U19, alongside Rahul Dravid's son Anvay, impressing with his strokeplay — scoring 109 runs across three innings at a strike rate of 103.81 without a truly substantial score.
Delhi's mixed season
Delhi have endured a patchy campaign, starting on a high by chasing down 339 against Gujarat before losing to Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka and seeing their game against Jharkhand washed out.
