Nitesh Siwach won the silver medal in the men's 97kg Greco-Roman wrestling event at the Asian Games 2026 on October 1, becoming the first Indian wrestler in 64 years to reach an Asian Games final in the Greco-Roman style.

The 23-year-old went down 0-4 to Japan's Yuri Nakazato in the final at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center. Siwach is only the second Indian ever to reach a Greco-Roman final at the Asian Games, after Maruti Mane did it in 1962.

Six medals on Day 12 for India

Siwach's silver headlined a six-medal haul for India on the penultimate day of competition. Sailors Manu Francis and Prince Kurisinkal Noble took silver in the men's skiff event, while Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma claimed bronze in the women's skiff.

India's men's and women's squash teams both won bronze medals, and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru secured bronze in the men's individual compound archery event, beating Vietnam's Cong Duc Dang 149-144 in the medal bout.

Tally and the days ahead

India's overall tally stood at 66 medals — 10 gold, 23 silver and 33 bronze — with the country sitting eighth in the standings. There was disappointment in women's wrestling, where Mansi Ahlawat lost 2-5 to Mongolia's Altjin Togtokh in the women's 62kg bronze-medal bout.

With the Games entering their final days, India have gold-medal chances still to come in hockey and boxing on October 2.
