'Avengers: Endgame' Reclaims All-Time Box Office Crown From 'Avatar' With 'Encore' Re-Release
Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame has officially reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing film of all time, edging past James Cameron's Avatar after its theatrical re-release as Avengers: Endgame Encore added approximately $126 million to its lifetime haul.
According to box office reports, Endgame's worldwide total now stands at roughly $2.9255 billion, narrowly ahead of Avatar's lifetime global total of around $2.9237 billion — a gap of barely $2 million, thinner than a single opening-night crowd.
The re-release opened strongly with approximately $86 million worldwide, but Endgame slipped to seventh place at the domestic box office in its second weekend, earning $4.4 million in North America and $14.4 million internationally. The additional earnings were still enough for the Marvel blockbuster to narrowly overtake Avatar and reclaim the global box office crown, The Times of India reported.
Marvel celebrates the milestone
Marvel Studios celebrated the milestone on social media on October 4, writing, "Thank you for assembling to make Avengers: Endgame the biggest movie of all time. We love you 3000." Directors Joe and Anthony Russo also shared a video message thanking fans. "Thank you for coming back to theaters for Endgame Encore and making Endgame the #1 film of all time. To every fan who's been part of this journey for the last seven years, we love you 3000," they said.
A crown that keeps changing hands
This is not the first time the two films have traded the top spot. Endgame first passed Avatar in July 2019, when its lifetime total hit $2.79 billion. Avatar reclaimed the title in 2021 with a re-release that pushed its tally past $2.81 billion. Endgame has now taken it back again, with the Encore version — featuring new footage and connections to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday — driving the return.
Both films are owned by Disney, which now accounts for seven of the 10 highest-grossing films of all time. The re-release has been positioned as a build-up to Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theatres this December.
