The Board of Control for Cricket in India has formally begun the process of finding Ajit Agarkar's successor, inviting applications for one vacancy on the senior men's selection committee on Tuesday, two days after the former India pacer's contract expired.
Pragyan Ojha, who has the most Test appearances among the remaining members of the panel, has been asked to chair the committee in the interim. Ojha will oversee the selection meetings for the upcoming New Zealand T20Is, ODIs and Tests.
Eligibility and deadline
In its media advisory, the BCCI set the deadline for applications at 5 p.m. on October 14. Candidates must have played at least seven Tests, or 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs along with 20 first-class matches, and must have retired from the game at least five years ago. Anyone who has served on a BCCI Cricket Committee for a cumulative five years will be ineligible.
The new member will be responsible for selecting the senior men's team across formats, identifying emerging talent and developing bench strength, alongside domestic and international match monitoring.
End of the Agarkar era
Agarkar, who took over as chairman in July 2023, did not seek an extension after his tenure ended on October 4. Under his leadership, India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. His last assignment was picking the white-ball squads for the ongoing West Indies series.
The appointment could also indicate whether the BCCI will retain the convention of picking Agarkar's replacement from the West Zone, the zone he represented.
