An artificial intelligence-powered traffic camera in Bengaluru has issued a helmet violation to a two-wheeler rider whose only "pillion passenger" was a guitar strapped to his back, The Hindu reported.
The incident involved Bengaluru resident Souvik Dutta, who was riding his wife's Ather 450X electric scooter from Hebbal towards Tin Factory along the Outer Ring Road on September 15 at 12:19 PM. With an acoustic guitar slung across his back, Dutta passed under an AI enforcement camera that apparently read the guitar case as a second person on the scooter — and flagged it as a pillion rider not wearing protective headgear.
An online challan of Rs 500 was generated the next day and sent to Dutta's wife, the scooter's registered owner. "So much for AI based traffic violation detection! Pls revoke the challan," Dutta wrote in a post tagging the Bengaluru Traffic Police's official handle, sharing the camera photograph that clearly showed his guitar.
What officials say
Responding to the complaint, Bengaluru Traffic Police officials asked Dutta to contact the traffic automation section so the violation could be rectified. A senior traffic police officer later acknowledged the pillion-rider violation was a false flag caused by an error in the AI system's judgment — something that "happens occasionally."
"The AI system sharpens with more and continuous data feeding, and it can go wrong occasionally," the officer said, noting the system has even flagged small children seated between two riders on scooters. A dedicated team verifies and corrects such wrongful flaggings, he added.
The episode has renewed concerns among motorists about automated enforcement. Many riders have complained on social media that the cameras book them for signal jumping even when they cross the zebra crossing only slightly to let other vehicles pass.
