Brazilian club Corinthians have appointed former Netherlands midfielder Clarence Seedorf as their new manager, handing the 50-year-old a contract until the end of the 2027 season.
The club announced the appointment on Sunday. It marks Seedorf's first managerial role in seven years — his last stint was in charge of Cameroon, from which he was sacked in July 2019. Before that, he managed AC Milan from January 2014, and also had spells with Shenzhen and Deportivo La Coruna.
A club in trouble
Seedorf takes over a side sitting just a point above the relegation zone in the Brazilian Serie A. Corinthians sacked previous manager Fernando Diniz on Wednesday, October 7, after a string of poor results left one of Brazil's most-supported clubs flirting with the drop.
Tough start
There is no gentle bedding-in for the former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder: his first test is an away trip to second-placed Palmeiras later on Sunday — a derby that could hardly come at a worse time for a manager stepping back into the dugout after seven years away.
Corinthians will hope Seedorf's decorated playing career and experience at some of Europe's biggest clubs can steady a squad under intense pressure from its vast fanbase.
