Premier League club Everton is on the market again. The Texas-based Friedkin Group, which bought the club less than two years ago, announced on Friday that it is exploring new investment options — including the potential sale of a controlling interest.

In a club statement, Everton said the group would only entertain interest from parties it strongly believes would be the right stewards to take the club forward. The announcement places fresh uncertainty over the nine-time English champions and a founding member of the Premier League.

Short tenure, long context

The Friedkin Group completed its purchase of Everton in December 2024, ending the turbulent eight-year ownership of Farhad Moshiri. The deal followed the collapse of a proposed buyout by Miami-based private investment firm 777 Partners, which ended a long-running saga over the club's ownership.

When the group took over, the club faced significant financial uncertainty and challenges on and off the pitch, the statement said. The immediate priority was to provide stability and investment — including helping to bring the long-promised new stadium to completion. With that foundation in place, the owners said, the time is right to consider the club's next chapter.

Everton opened the Hill Dickinson Stadium at the start of the 2025-26 Premier League season, with the women's team becoming the primary tenant of the historic Goodison Park, the men's team's home since 1892.

Pressure on the pitch

The announcement comes amid frustration among supporters about how the owners have approached squad reinforcement. A backlash to a proposed move that would have sent 19-year-old Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest scuttled the transfer, and the collapsed deal for US international Folarin Balogun after the sale of two attacking players in the summer has increased pressure on the forwards who remain — including Thierno Barry and Jack Grealish.

On the field, the team has coped so far, avoiding defeat in each of its first five Premier League matches of the season. The Friedkin Group also owns Italian club Roma as part of a portfolio spanning automotive, entertainment, hospitality and sports businesses.
