Prime Video has released the first official images from Bloodaxe, the eight-part Viking historical drama from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst, which is expected to stream in early 2027.
The first look, released on October 5, introduces Xavier Molyneux as Erik Bloodaxe, the legendary Norse raider, and Bridgerton star Jessica Madsen as his wife Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings.
A fight for Norway's throne
The drama follows Erik Bloodaxe and Gunnhild's bid for the Norwegian throne, set against rival kings, shifting loyalties and betrayals across the Norse world, with the Hirsts serving as creators, writers, showrunners and executive producers.
The season one cast also includes Sisse Marie, Levi Miller, Rune Temte, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett and Alina Tomnikov.
Renewed before it airs
In a rare show of confidence, Prime Video has already renewed Bloodaxe for a second season before the first has premiered, with season two already in production.
Michael Hirst created the original Vikings series, which ran for six seasons and picked up 13 Emmy nominations, before executive-producing the Netflix sequel Vikings: Valhalla. No exact premiere date has been announced yet for Bloodaxe season one.
