Rural and semi-urban India's consumer confidence weakened in September even as households stayed optimistic about the year ahead, the Reserve Bank of India's latest Rural Consumer Confidence Survey has found.
The September 2026 round of the bi-monthly survey, conducted between September 10 and 20 among 8,799 respondents across all states and three major union territories, showed confidence softening across most parameters — with spending the lone exception.
The numbers
The Current Situation Index, which captures how households perceive the economy, employment, prices, income and spending relative to a year ago, moderated to 90.6. The Future Expectations Index, measuring expectations for the next year, stayed in the optimistic zone but eased to 112.8.
Inflation perceptions rose 70 basis points to 6.8 per cent, while year-ahead inflation expectations climbed 50 basis points to 7.9 per cent — a signal that rising prices are weighing on rural sentiment.
What it means
The survey is one of the RBI's regular pulse-checks on household sentiment outside urban India, covering perceptions of the overall economic situation alongside employment, prices, household income and spending. The September reading suggests rural households are feeling the pinch in the present while still betting that conditions will improve over the coming twelve months.
For policymakers, the rising inflation expectations among rural respondents will be worth watching ahead of the festive season, when rural demand traditionally plays a significant role in overall consumption.
