Finnish technology group Wartsila has won an order to supply a 282 MW onsite power plant for a data center project being developed by a major US independent power producer, underlining how fast-deployable engine power is becoming central to the AI infrastructure build-out in the United States.

The order, booked by Wartsila in the third quarter of 2026 and announced on October 5, will see 15 of the company's 50SG engines installed at the site. Equipment deliveries are scheduled for 2028, with the project expected to become fully operational in 2029.

Seventh US data center order

The project is Wartsila's seventh data center-related order in the United States and takes the total power capacity the company has sold for American data center applications past 3 GW. The customer chose the engine-based solution for its ability to deliver large-scale capacity on efficient timelines while enabling phased expansion as computing demand grows.

Risto Paldanius, Vice President for the Americas at Wartsila Energy, said the US data center market is "moving faster than traditional power infrastructure can support," adding that flexible onsite power helps developers secure reliable electricity, cut deployment risk and scale with confidence.

The 50SG engines use a closed-loop cooling system that minimises water consumption compared with conventional thermal alternatives, and can be converted to run on future fuels — features Wartsila positions as important for data center developers under pressure over water use and emissions.

Grid constraints driving onsite deals

The announcement comes as grid constraints and long connection timelines make onsite generation an increasingly attractive option for new data centers. Goldman Sachs said on Sunday that US data center power demand is forecast to grow 38 per cent in both 2026 and 2027, even as political and community opposition to the projects intensifies. Meanwhile, The Wilderness Society has called for a moratorium on AI data centers on US federal lands, citing concerns over water, electricity and habitat.
