Zach Cregger's 'Resident Evil' Crosses $320 Million Worldwide, Becoming the Franchise's Biggest Hit
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil has passed $320 million at the worldwide box office, officially making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise's history and the biggest commercial success of Cregger's directing career.
According to Screen Daily, the film reached $320.2 million through the October 9-11 weekend, surpassing the franchise's previous best — a record held by The Final Chapter, which trade sources have placed between $312.2 million and $314.1 million. The reboot has now moved past both figures. It also overtakes Cregger's own Weapons, which earned around $270 million worldwide last year, becoming his top-grossing release.
China launch powers a fourth-weekend return to No. 1
The film returned to the top of the global weekend box office in its fourth frame, grossing $62.7 million worldwide over October 9-11, driven largely by its launch in China. The Chinese opening week brought in $40.6 million — the best horror opening in China in two years — with Variety reporting a cumulative China total of $40.7 million following its October 5 rollout. IMAX screens in China contributed $7.7 million of the weekend, with the film's total IMAX gross now at $32.8 million.
Box Office Mojo's split shows roughly $181.7 million from international markets against $138.5 million domestic. In the US, the fourth weekend is estimated at $8.35 million from 3,085 theatres, down 33.8% from $12.62 million the prior weekend. The film opened domestically to $60.15 million on September 18-20.
Strength across markets
Other cumulative totals include the UK at $17.0 million, Mexico at $11.8 million, Australia and France at $8.5 million each, Germany at $7.3 million and Spain at $7.1 million. Japan opened to $3.6 million, adding another territory to the film's wide international footprint.
