The 70th edition of the BFI London Film Festival opens on Wednesday, October 7, with the international premiere of Elsinore, Simon Stone's biographical drama about actor Ian Charleson, screening as the opening-night gala at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.

The festival runs from October 7 to October 18 across seven London venues — including BFI Southbank, BFI IMAX, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Prince Charles Cinema — with more than 250 films drawn from festivals and filmmakers around the world.

An opening night steeped in theatre history
Directed by BAFTA-nominated Simon Stone (The Dig) and written by BAFTA winner and Golden Globe nominee Stephen Beresford (Pride), Elsinore follows Charleson as he prepares to play Hamlet at London's National Theatre while facing extraordinary personal odds. The film stars Andrew Scott as Charleson alongside Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn and Luke Thompson.

What to watch for
Jesse Eisenberg's musical comedy The Debut will close the festival on October 18, making its UK premiere at the Royal Festival Hall. The Official Competition includes ten features from directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda, Sergei Loznitsa, Lili Horvát and May el-Toukhy, with the Best Film winner announced on October 18. The lineup also features two high-profile animated world premieres: Brad Bird's Ray Gunn and Travis Knight's Wildwood. Artistic director Kristy Matheson told The Hollywood Reporter the 70th-edition programme balances returning festival alumni with first-time voices, and treats animation as a continued priority.
