Drishyam: The Conclusion has crossed the Rs 500 crore mark at the worldwide box office, and director Abhishek Pathak has used the moment to firmly rule out a fourth instalment in the franchise.
The Ajay Devgn-starrer crossed the milestone on its 12th day in theatres, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 501.80 crore, according to trade website Sacnilk, as reported by The Telegraph India on Wednesday.
The box office breakdown
The film earned Rs 8.50 crore nett in India on Tuesday, registering a 41.7 per cent increase over Monday's Rs 6 crore nett. Its total domestic nett collection stands at Rs 323.50 crore, while the domestic gross is Rs 387.80 crore. Overseas markets have contributed Rs 114 crore to the worldwide total.
The film opened in theatres on October 2 with Rs 62 crore nett and collected Rs 245.50 crore nett in its first week. The cast includes Ajay Devgn alongside Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor, Prakash Raj and Ishita Dutta, with Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj joining the franchise for this chapter.
No fourth film on the cards
In an interview with Screen, Pathak said there were no plans for another film despite the strong audience response. "All of us believe this is the last part of the film. Obviously, the audience is loving it, and talking about it. But Drishyam isn't the franchise where we can just decide to make another film. It's very much dependent on the story, and the story has ended," he said.
Pathak described the ending as a "poetic ending" and a love letter to the franchise, noting that the finale deliberately calls back to the 2015 original directed by the late Nishikant Kamat. He also said the Hindi team had not borrowed anything from Mohanlal's Malayalam version, which is being developed separately.
The director's stance settles weeks of speculation that began when Devgn described the threequel as the end of the franchise, adding a teasing "for now".
