Indian football could be in line for a significant financial windfall, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) poised to receive $25 million — roughly Rs 237 crore — over the next four years if FIFA members approve a sharp increase in development funding.

According to a report by the Associated Press, FIFA plans to ask its 211 member associations to raise the development fund for the next four-year cycle to $6.35 billion. Under the proposal, each national association, including the AIFF, would receive $25 million for the 2027–30 period — more than double the $10 million originally earmarked per federation.

What the proposal contains

FIFA President Gianni Infantino outlined the plan in a September 28 letter to the leaders of football's six continental confederations, framing it around the commercial success of the latest 48-team World Cup. To finance the increase, FIFA would distribute more than $3.5 billion from its financial reserves while retaining cash reserves of $1.7 billion. The proposal also includes $99 million for each of the six continental confederations over the same period.

"Taken together, your submissions confirm broad agreement on the central objective: FIFA's financial success must serve football and all FIFA's 211 member associations," Infantino wrote in the letter.

What happens next

The plan is set to be discussed by the FIFA Council — the meeting was scheduled for October 15 — before a consultation process and potential finalisation in December. It would then require approval at the 77th FIFA Congress in March 2027. The timeline also matters politically: Infantino is seeking re-election at that congress, and the funding boost follows the collapse of his plan to sell a stake in FIFA's World Cup commercial operations to private investors after opposition from UEFA and other bodies.

For the AIFF, which has faced governance and funding challenges in recent years, the additional money could prove significant for development projects — though it is worth noting the funding is a proposal for now, not a done deal.
