Indian tennis will get a fresh elected administration by the end of November. The All India Tennis Association on Wednesday announced that fresh elections will be held on November 27, following its annual general meeting in Ahmedabad.
Rajeev Sharma, the former state election commissioner of Haryana, was appointed election commissioner for the polls. The appointment was made under the National Sports Election Panel constituted under the National Sports Governance Act.
The announcement came on the final day of the court-appointed administrator's mandate, which ran up to September 30 with no court-directed extension. "We held our AGM in Ahmedabad today and appointed the election commissioner," interim president Chintan Parikh told news agency PTI.
Trust issues and a unanimous decision
The AGM also appointed a task force to examine issues around the AITA Trust, comprising Parikh, Hironmoy Chatterjee, Prem Karra and Asit Tripathy. The meeting unanimously decided that the AITA Trust "has to come into the AITA umbrella," Parikh said.
In an inclusive move, two para players — Tamil Nadu's Mariappan Dorai and Karnataka's K.P. Shilpa — were inducted into the general body with voting rights. A dispute resolution committee was also constituted.
Election schedule
The final electoral colleges will be published on November 7, with nominations open from November 14 to 16. The draft nominations list will appear on November 16, objections can be filed on November 17, and scrutiny will take place on November 21 and 22. The final candidate list is due on November 23, the withdrawal deadline is November 24, and the final list of contesting candidates will be published on November 25.
The elections follow a long legal tangle. The AITA elections of September 28, 2024 were kept in sealed cover by the Delhi High Court; in an April 27, 2026 judgment, the court ordered the sealed results to be opened, with an interim body — headed by administrator Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal — functioning until fresh elections. The AITA amended its constitution on July 26 this year as part of the overhaul.
