Amazon has unveiled a redesigned Kindle lineup on October 1, one of the biggest hardware refreshes for its e-readers in years, with prices ranging from $149.99 to $319.99.

The most noticeable change is the move to flush-front displays across the range, removing the raised bezel around the screen. Amazon says it developed a touch system that recognises where a user's thumb is positioned and creates a temporary area that ignores accidental touches.

The new models

The standard 6-inch Kindle is now thinner and lighter, weighs 140 grams, and opens books about 30% faster than the previous generation. It starts at $149.99, and Amazon is also introducing an aluminum-backed version for the first time, with 32GB of storage priced at $189.99. The company says the aluminum housing uses 80% recycled aluminum.

The Kindle Paperwhite gets a thinner and lighter body, stays waterproof, and keeps its adjustable warm light, with battery life of up to 12 weeks. It starts at $199.99, while the Signature Edition at $249.99 adds an aluminum back, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, dock charging and a double-tap gesture for turning pages.

The 7-inch Kindle Colorsoft gets a redesigned display with edge-to-edge colour, using nitride LEDs to raise brightness without washing out detail. It starts at $289.99, with a Signature Edition at $319.99.

Availability and accessories

The new 6-inch Kindle models began shipping immediately on October 1, while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft opened for preorder with US availability scheduled for October 28. Kids versions are available across all three families, starting at $179.99.

New accessories include the $34.99 Kindle Click, a Bluetooth remote that works with the new models and any Kindle from 2024 or later; a $79.99 Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons for the Signature Editions; and a $59.99 Charging Dock.

The refresh follows an August price increase that raised the base Kindle from $109.99 to $149.99 and the Paperwhite from $159.99 to $199.99. Amazon said users read more than 720 billion pages on Kindle devices in 2025.
