AMD chair and chief executive Lisa Su arrived in Taiwan this week for a tightly scheduled visit focused on securing chipmaking capacity, less than five months after announcing more than $10 billion in AI investments in the country.

According to Taiwan media reports, Su is holding closed-door meetings with key supply chain partners including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Hon Hai, Quanta Computer, Wistron, Inventec and Pegatron. No major public events have been scheduled for the trip.

Securing supply for AI servers

The central aim of the visit is to shore up advanced packaging, testing and substrate capacity so AMD can meet shipment targets for its MI450 AI servers, which are entering volume production in the second half of 2026, and the follow-on MI455 series planned for 2027.

AMD's Venice EPYC processor has already entered mass production on TSMC's 2-nanometre process, and the company is also looking to enter the custom AI chip market. The visit underlines how upstream capacity constraints continue to ripple through the supply chain as global competition for AI computing power intensifies.

Next stop: South Korea

Su is expected to make only a brief public appearance of about 15 minutes at midday before travelling to South Korea on October 8. There, she is expected to attend an AI semiconductor forum in Seoul and meet local giants including Samsung Electronics.

Market attention is on whether the trip will produce new agreements on high-bandwidth memory cooperation, with Samsung set to begin supplying the HBM3E memory required for AMD's AI products starting next year.

The whirlwind tour reflects Taiwan's entrenched position at the centre of the global AI supply chain. Su's last visit in May saw AMD commit to expanding partnerships and packaging capacity in Taiwan as data centre customers increasingly look for alternatives to the dominant suppliers in the AI chip race.
