Anthropic has pushed its Claude assistant deeper into everyday work tools, launching a public beta that places Claude directly inside Google's productivity suite.
Editing in place
"Claude for Google Workspace" was announced on October 6 and is now available in public beta on all paid Claude plans. It adds a Claude sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides that works alongside the open file: the assistant can read the document, spreadsheet or deck, see the selected text, cells or slides, and edit them in place.
Approval-first approach
By default, Claude operates in an "Ask before edits" mode, presenting each proposed change as an approval card the user can accept or reject. An "Accept all edits" mode is available for users who want the assistant to work through a file without stopping.
What it can do
In Docs, Claude can fix sentences, rewrite sections and change headings while keeping formatting intact. In Sheets, it can write formulas, create pivot tables, build native charts, add tabs and clean up data. In Slides, it can generate slides from the deck's existing layouts and themes and audit them for overlapping elements or hard-to-read text.
Anthropic also released beta connectors for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides that allow Claude to create and edit Google files from within a Claude conversation itself.
The add-on is installed through the Google Workspace Marketplace, after which users open it from the Extensions menu. The launch pits Anthropic squarely against Google's own Gemini integrations in Workspace — an unusual competitive dynamic, with one AI lab's assistant now living inside its rival's software.
