Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was set to have dinner with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Sunday evening, in what would be the first one-on-one meeting between the two men — coming at a moment of sharp public disagreement over how fast artificial intelligence should advance.

The dinner plans were first reported by Axios and subsequently confirmed by TechCrunch with a source familiar with Amodei's plans.

Why the meeting matters

Amodei has recently released a plan calling for AI development to be slowed — or at least to proceed with much more caution — arguing that the technology's risks demand stronger safeguards. Trump, by contrast, has insisted, without offering evidence, that the AI backlash is a Democratic hoax, and has proposed rebranding the technology as "super intelligence".

The dinner places one of the AI industry's most prominent safety advocates across the table from a president who has publicly taken a sharply different line on the technology's risks. It follows a weekend in which Amodei was also lampooned on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, putting him in the public spotlight twice over.

A fraught history

The relationship between Anthropic and the Trump administration has been tense. Earlier this year, the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk in response to the company's attempt to put guardrails around how its technology is used, and Anthropic has been fighting that designation in court. At the same time, other administration officials have been friendlier to the company.

The meeting's outcome remains unknown. It could mark the start of a reset in the administration's relationship with one of the leading AI labs, or simply a courtesy meeting with no policy commitments attached. But as the first direct encounter between the two men, it signals that the future direction of AI — and who gets to set the rules for it — is now a White House-level conversation.
