HBO's acclaimed crime anthology True Detective is adding a second screen legend to its upcoming season. Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of the show's fifth season, which will be led by Nicolas Cage.

The new leads

The casting was announced on Friday, days after Cage confirmed at New York Comic Con that he would headline the new season. According to Deadline, the 62-year-old National Treasure star will play Henry Logan, while the 66-year-old Mask of Zorro actor will play Rai Garcia. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the new season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York.

Production timeline

Production for season five is scheduled to begin in 2027, with Issa Lopez returning as showrunner after helming the fourth season, Night Country. Cage was first reported to be in talks for the lead role last year, and his on-stage confirmation at Comic Con ended months of speculation.

True Detective has reinvented itself with each season, with previous chapters starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in season one, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in season two, Mahershala Ali in season three, and Jodie Foster in season four.

Banderas, known for films ranging from The Mask of Zorro to Pain and Glory, adds to a growing list of A-list film talent making the jump to HBO's anthology format. With two marquee names now attached and a New York setting, the fifth season is shaping up as one of the network's most anticipated returns.
