Apple is planning a second product launch in October to introduce its first touch-screen MacBook and a new iPad mini, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The launch is scheduled on or around Tuesday, October 27, and will also bring new versions of the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac powered by M6 chips, the report said. Like Apple's smart-home event slated for October 13, the end-of-month unveiling will combine an online video presentation with an in-person component for the press, and is expected to be geared toward creative professionals working in video production, photo editing and music production.

The unveilings are part of what Gurman described as a record-setting product slate under Chief Executive Officer John Ternus, who took the helm last month and is aiming to steer the company into new markets while growing revenue from related services. Apple declined to comment on the plans.

Touch-based Macs, OLED displays

The move into touch-based computers has been long anticipated. The new MacBook Pros, code-named K114 and K116, will be lighter than current models and will carry OLED screens along with the Dynamic Island interface familiar to iPhone users. Bloomberg first reported on the touch-screen Mac project in 2023.

The new M6 Macs — code-named J804 and J833 — are expected to look largely like their current versions, while the new iPad mini, code-named J510, will also get an OLED screen, a videoconferencing camera moved to the landscape side and a revamped speaker system. Gurman has previously reported that Apple has several other new Macs and iPads planned for the first half of next year.

The October 13 smart-home event, meanwhile, is expected to debut Apple's first smart-home hub with a display, a new HomePod mini and an updated Apple TV set-top box, all built around the Siri AI assistant, with accessories from LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.
