Apple exported $13.2 billion worth of iPhones from India in the first five months of the current financial year, a record for the period and a 47 per cent jump over the same months a year earlier, according to a report by The Economic Times cited by Business Today.
The figures, covering April to August, underline how central Apple has become to India's electronics export story. iPhones accounted for 82 per cent of India's total smartphone exports of $15.96 billion during those five months, which themselves grew 36 per cent year-on-year. Overall electronics exports rose 34 per cent to $26.66 billion.
**Smartphones are now India's top export**
An official familiar with the numbers said smartphones have now become India's top-ranked export category. Alongside Apple, Samsung and Dixon — which manufactures Motorola phones — contributed to the smartphone export tally.
One analyst noted that the five-month mobile export figure of $15.96 billion in FY27 is already higher than India's full-year smartphone exports of $15.8 billion in FY24, showing how fast the manufacturing base has scaled.
The momentum follows the Centre's new Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS), which took effect in April 2026 and replaced the earlier production-linked incentive programme. According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the scheme is aimed at increasing global competitiveness, deepening domestic value addition, and strengthening the supply chain.
**Deepening roots in India**
Apple is rapidly expanding its iPhone production and building up its supplier network in the country. The report says India-made units of the latest iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models were sold globally from the first day of sales, alongside units made in China, and that most iPhones sold in India are now manufactured locally.
The company has also moved beyond simple assembly: enclosures, PCB assemblies, mechanical components, housings, flexible PCB assemblies, and conductive graphite buttons for functions such as volume and power are increasingly being made in India. Apple is gradually expanding its retail presence as well.
