India's Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru won the men's individual bronze medal in compound archery at the Asian Games on Thursday, defeating Vietnam's Cong Duc Dang 149-144 in the bronze medal playoff at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square.
The 20-year-old produced a near-flawless performance in the playoff, hitting the target cleanly on 14 of his 15 attempts and closing with three successive perfect arrows to pull clear of his opponent. It was Ganesh's second medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, having won gold as part of the men's team on Wednesday.
Bouncing back from semifinal defeat
Ganesh had missed out on a spot in the individual gold match after a 144-148 semifinal loss to South Korea's Kim Jongho, in which he trailed throughout the last-four clash.
Earlier in the day, he had been in stellar form in the quarterfinals, sweeping past Chinese Taipei's Chieh-Lun Chen 148-138 and winning all five series.
India's compound tally: three golds and a bronze
The bronze completed India's compound archery campaign at the Games, with the nation finishing with three gold medals in the team events — men's, women's and mixed — and one bronze in the individuals.
The individual compound events were the two disciplines in which India failed to defend their gold medals from Hangzhou 2023, where the compound archers had swept all five gold medals.
Chikitha misses medal hat-trick
Chikitha Taniparthi, who had won golds in both the women's team and mixed team compound events on Wednesday, bowed out of the women's individual quarterfinals after a narrow 143-144 loss to Indonesia's Nurisa Dian Ashrifah. She trailed after the opening two ends, fought back to take the lead in the third, but a final end of 8, 9, 10 proved costly as Nurisa responded with 10, 10, 9.
