India ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games women's hockey gold on Friday, edging defending champions China 1-0 in a tense final at Kakamigahara — a victory that also sealed direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Lalremsiami struck the only goal of the match in the 10th minute, marking her 200th international appearance with a stunning finish from the left side of the circle after India won the ball back in a dangerous area.
The final, delayed by an hour after both teams were stuck in traffic congestion en route to the stadium, belonged to India's defence from that moment on. Goalkeeper Savita Punia produced the save of the tournament in the second quarter, diving to her left to keep out a penalty stroke from China's Zhang Ying. Navneet Kaur then produced a last-gasp goalline clearance from a penalty corner.
India, who had scored 68 goals and conceded just three across the tournament, spent much of the game under pressure from the defending champions. Captain Salima Tete, who briefly left the field after hurting her hand blocking a Chinese penalty corner, returned to marshal the backline through the closing stages. China even removed their goalkeeper in the final minutes for an all-out attack, but India's defence held firm.
The triumph marks India's first women's hockey gold at the Asian Games since the sport's debut at New Delhi 1982. Since then, India had managed two silvers and four bronzes but never the top prize — until Friday.
It was also India's sixth gold of a remarkable day at Aichi-Nagoya, with the contingent's overall medal tally climbing to 75. On Saturday, the men's team can complete a historic double when they face Malaysia in their final.
