Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has begun shooting his new untitled crime drama for Prime Video, headlined by Bipasha Basu — marking the actor's return to acting after a gap of nearly six years. Sunny Kaushal and Vishal Jethwa round out the principal cast.

The makers announced on Monday that production had officially commenced. Set in a small town on the verge of becoming the continent's heroin capital, the series follows an incorruptible police officer, played by Sunny Kaushal, who is caught between criminal networks and pressure from within the system as he tries to hold his ground.

The show is written by Kashyap Kapoor and Raghav Raj Kakker and produced by Prabhleen Sandhu under the banner of Almighty Motion Pictures Productions. Details of the characters played by Basu and Jethwa have not been disclosed, and the title and release date remain under wraps.

A comeback six years in the making

Bipasha was last seen in the 2020 web series Dangerous, stepping away from acting after the birth of her daughter Devi; her last theatrical release was the 2015 horror film Alone. Mehta, known for his grounded crime dramas, directs the project. A report by Mid-Day says the series is titled Barabanki and draws on retired IPS officer Aloke Lal's book on a 1980s drug-cartel operation — a detail the makers have not confirmed in their filming announcement.
