Five-time world champions Brazil marked their first-ever senior men's international on Indian soil with a commanding 4-0 victory over India at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
Carlo Ancelotti's side, rebuilding after their pre-quarterfinal exit at the 2026 World Cup, largely played within themselves but needed just four moments of quality to settle a contest that drew a crowd of more than 51,000.
India hold their own — then Brazil strike
India frustrated the visitors for the opening half hour. Manvir Singh offered an outlet on the left while Ryan Williams and Ashique Kuruniyan threatened on the counter. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu denied Vinicius Jr early, and Lalengmawia Ralte sent a shot narrowly wide after a corner.
But the breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute. Cutting in from the right, Estevao fired past Sandhu at the near post. The Chelsea winger then turned provider in the 42nd minute, threading a defence-splitting pass for Pedro to finish from the right side of the box and make it 2-0 at half-time.
Lino seals it with a second-half brace
Ancelotti made five changes at the break, introducing Samuel Lino, Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Magalhaes, Vanderson and Douglas Luiz. Lino needed only 13 minutes to make his mark, intercepting a misplaced pass in India's defensive third and curling home a fine finish in the 58th minute.
India did not fold. Williams saw an effort cleared off the line, and Manvir continued to probe, but the visitors added a fourth deep in stoppage time as Lino cut inside from the edge of the box and drove a low shot past the goalkeeper to complete his brace.
Respect despite the gulf
India, ranked 138th in the world, came into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with 44th-ranked Panama and left the pitch having earned their visitors' respect. Ancelotti had spoken of "full respect for India" before the game, and his side's controlled — rather than ruthless — display reflected a team using the friendly to build rhythm rather than records.
For India, the winless streak stretched to six matches. But on a night the Salt Lake Stadium hosted football royalty for the first time, the result was almost secondary to the occasion: a landmark evening for the sport in the country.
