Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has been granted conditional bail a day after his detention in the national capital, marking the latest turn in the ongoing confrontation between the youth activist group and the Delhi Police over protests against the Election Commission.
Bail and bond conditions
Dipke was granted conditional bail and asked to sign a bond. According to reports, the special executive magistrate released him on the condition that he ensure there is no breach of peace on his part for a period of one year. The release comes a day after he was detained while on his way to a planned CJP demonstration.
The arrest
Dipke was detained moments after he stepped out of his house in Delhi's Jhandewalan area to take part in the CJP's "Lehra Do Tiranga" protest at Connaught Place on Friday. He was arrested on Saturday morning for allegedly violating a peace bond furnished by him on October 10, The Hindu reported.
The arrest followed days of heightened tension in the capital, with Delhi Police imposing curbs around Connaught Place and shutting Central Park ahead of the planned protest. Dipke's detention had drawn sharp reactions from opposition leaders and civil-society groups, several of whom accused the authorities of suppressing peaceful dissent. The police, for their part, have maintained that preventive action was required to maintain public order in the sensitive central Delhi zone.
Dipke's group has been at the forefront of agitations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a return to paper ballots, with protests in the capital continuing through the week.
