The leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party were released from detention on Sunday morning after being produced before an executive magistrate, even as the party called a fresh demonstration at Delhi's Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Leaders produced before magistrate
CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were released on Sunday after a day in detention. According to The Tribune, they had been placed under preventive arrest in connection with Saturday's protest and were produced before the executive magistrate at the Delhi Cantonment police station at 9 am on Sunday. News18 reported that their release followed the magistrate's proceedings.
Most detainees freed; Rathee released late Saturday
Police freed most of the thousands detained across Delhi on Saturday, holding only the CJP leaders for further legal process. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who had been picked up from his Gurugram residence on Saturday ahead of the protest, was released from Gurugram Police custody late on Saturday night, officials said. Police sources cautioned that he could be detained again if he goes to Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders.
Fresh protest called for 10 am
The CJP has renewed its call for a march to Jantar Mantar at 10 am on Sunday, vowing to continue demonstrations until Kumar resigns over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police have denied permission for the protest. The Tribune reported, citing PTI, that over 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed across the capital for a second consecutive day, with security tightened at borders, railway stations, bus terminals and the airport.
Saturday's crackdown
Saturday saw one of the largest preventive-detention operations in the capital in recent memory. Hindustan Times reported that about 7,000 people were detained and around 41,000 security personnel deployed, while News18 put the number of detentions at around 3,000. Four former chief ministers — Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar — were among those picked up. Delhi Police defended the action in a video posted on X, saying the CJP had failed to abide by a signed undertaking given during its June-July protests. Press bodies including the Press Club of India and the Indian Women's Press Corps condemned the detention and harassment of journalists covering the stir, saying police detained several reporters despite their press identity cards and seized the phones and equipment of some.
