Delhi Police have asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to close the entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations across the national capital from 9 pm on Friday, October 9, until the situation normalises, ahead of a planned protest on Saturday.
The proposal was conveyed to DMRC through an official communication dated October 8 from the Joint Commissioner of Police (Transport Range), citing the possibility of unruly crowd movement towards sensitive locations in the capital.
What the proposal covers
The request covers 57 stations across central, north, south, east and other parts of Delhi, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Janpath, New Delhi, Mandi House, ITO, Supreme Court, Indraprastha, Kashmere Gate, Karol Bagh, INA, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Jamia Millia Islamia, Shaheen Bagh, Seelampur, Welcome, Shahdara, Rohini East and Rohini West, among others.
Police have also suggested reducing the frequency of metro trains passing through the identified stations on October 10, depending on the situation. Commuters have been advised to check official metro announcements before planning journeys on Friday night and Saturday.
Decision rests with DMRC
The final call on whether the restrictions will be implemented lies with DMRC, which had not confirmed the closures at the time the reports emerged. The communication is a police proposal and does not by itself establish that DMRC has approved or implemented the closures.
The proposed measures are linked to the youth-led demonstration announced by the Cockroach Janata Party at Jantar Mantar on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Trains also affected
Several trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations on Saturday morning have been cancelled as a precautionary measure, with Railways citing anticipated traffic congestion in the national capital. The Railways has not confirmed any direct link between the cancellations and the protest, and passengers have been advised to check official railway channels before travelling.
