Imphal: Fresh violence erupted in Manipur on Friday night, leaving three people dead and several houses torched in clashes between armed Kuki and Naga groups, officials said on Saturday. District authorities imposed prohibitory orders in Kamjong district as gunfire continued into the morning.
A 42-year-old woman, identified by officials as Domkhonei Touthang, a Kuki civilian and mother of five, was shot near her neck in Chassad village in Kamjong district on Friday night and died within minutes. According to Kuki civil bodies, she was participating in a protest against the alleged arrest and detention of village volunteers when she was shot around 9:35 PM. The Kuki Human Rights Forum has alleged that she was shot by an officer of the Indian Reserve Battalion and demanded a time-bound independent judicial inquiry along with the release of the detained youths. Officials have not confirmed who fired the shot, and the circumstances remain unclear.
Clashes spread across districts
Her killing triggered an exchange of fire between Kuki and Naga armed groups that continued on Saturday morning, officials said. A 22-year-old man was killed in the ensuing clashes, during which 10 houses were torched, news agency PTI reported. A separate IANS report said several people were injured on both sides and four houses were set ablaze.
In a separate incident in Ukhrul district, a 40-year-old man, Sandeep Rai, was shot dead near Chepu Yaolen after suspected militants opened fire at the vehicle he was driving. Heavy exchanges of fire were also reported between armed groups at Makui Ashang and Tapon in Kangpokpi district.
Restrictions imposed
The Kamjong district administration imposed prohibitory restrictions within a 400-metre radius of the Chassad Police Gate Junction, banning the assembly of five or more people, the carrying of firearms and movement within the restricted area under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
Officials said more than 40 people have been killed and dozens of houses torched since violence between Kuki and Naga communities broke out in February this year, concentrated in Ukhrul, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Tamenglong and Noney districts.
