Breaking: Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Will Stay Shut Until US Meets Seven Conditions

Dubai: Iran's parliament speaker said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the United States meets seven Iranian conditions set out in a June interim agreement between the two countries.

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf made the remarks a few days after Tehran received Washington's reply to its latest diplomatic proposal aimed at ending the conflict, according to Iran's Nournews.

"The Americans, who say something different in the media, have recently put forward proposals through a mediator. But they must understand that the period of dragging out the process and dictating one-sided demands is over," Qalibaf was quoted as saying.

"The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and firm, and the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until our seven conditions, based on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, are met."

What the conditions involve

Earlier Reuters reporting on the interim deal said Iran's conditions include lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, removing oil sanctions, releasing frozen Iranian assets and ending US threats and military operations against Iran.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately said on Sunday that Tehran's plan could see the strait reopen within seven days if Washington accepts Iran's conditions, though he stressed Iran was prepared to respond if the United States resumed military action.

The interim deal, also known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, was reached between the US and Iran in June following mediation by Pakistan after months of conflict. It included a 60-day ceasefire and a timetable for a final deal covering both the war and Iran's nuclear programme.

Diplomacy continues through mediators

Tehran has kept its hold on the strait since the US began military operations against Iran in late February, while Washington continues a counter-blockade of Iranian ports. The two sides have kept up indirect discussions through regional mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan.
