Breaking: Neha Bora Detained as CJP Protests Spill Into Sunday; Leaders Released on Surety

The student-led protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar continued in Delhi on Sunday, with AISA president Neha Bora detained by police as demonstrators attempted to regroup — even as arrested CJP leaders secured release from custody.

According to The Quint, Bora was detained on Sunday during the continuing protests demanding the CEC's resignation. The demonstrations began at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, drawing thousands, and were met with a massive police deployment. Late on Saturday, Bora had vowed the agitation would continue, telling supporters: "Let a hundred Jantar Mantars bloom."

On Sunday, Jantar Mantar remained sealed and more than 40,000 personnel were deployed across the capital, with barricades and traffic diversions at around 30 points. Protesters responded to Bora's call and regrouped at Dilli Haat around 1 pm, where she and other leaders were detained on Sri Aurobindo Marg. The Quint reported that at least 200 protesters were detained from the area, some taken to detention centres in Maidan Garhi, and that nearly 2,500 protesters detained across Delhi on Sunday were released by late evening. After her detention, Bora posted on social media: "Dilli Haat becomes our Jantar Mantar! Gyanesh Kumar must go!"

Separately, the Hindustan Times live blog reported that CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke and Saurav Das were produced before an executive magistrate and released after furnishing a Rs 50,000 surety bond. A court order barred the CJP leaders from "breaching peace" for one year. Four people were also held for allegedly assaulting female protesters and journalists. Released CJP leaders declared the movement unbowed, and Dipke later attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on X, calling him "an embarrassment to India".

The Supreme Court, which held a special Sunday sitting on the crackdown, ordered that there be no illegal detention of people peacefully gathering.
