Breaking: Three FIRs Filed Against Rahul Gandhi for Allegedly Assaulting Police During Anti-CEC Protest; Priyanka Also Named

Breaking: At least three first information reports have been filed against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing them during the INDIA bloc's protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday, The Indian Express reported on Thursday. Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has also been named in the FIRs.

The two Congress leaders have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita covering assault on police personnel, obstruction of government work, pushing and manhandling, and misbehaviour with police personnel, ANI reported.

Second set of FIRs linked to the protest

The cases follow a tense standoff on Wednesday between police and Opposition MPs, who boarded three buses from a lunch hosted by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and headed toward Jantar Mantar for a sit-in demanding Mr Kumar's resignation.

Police stopped the buses near the designated protest site. Officials said 91 people, including MPs, were detained. Mr Gandhi was taken to Barakhamba Road police station, while Ms Vadra and other leaders were taken to Chhatrasal Stadium. Both were released shortly after 8 pm, PTI reported.

During the confrontation, Ms Vadra and other women leaders lay on the road clutching copies of the Constitution until they were removed and loaded into police buses. Delhi Police are examining mobile phone videos of the protest, in which personnel including women officers were allegedly assaulted.

Earlier FIR and Rahul's response

This is the second set of FIRs against the top Congress leaders linked to the agitation. The first was registered on Tuesday over their alleged unauthorised entry into Akashvani Bhawan during the march from Parliament to the Election Commission office.

Mr Gandhi said the protests would continue until Mr Kumar resigns. "Every FIR is a medal on my chest," he said on Wednesday. "Right now, there are 45, my goal is 100 - even then, we will keep fighting to defend the Constitution."
