Breaking: Three Killed, 16 Wounded in Ukrainian Attacks on Russia's Belgorod Region, Governor Says

Three people have been killed and 16 wounded in Ukrainian attacks on Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, the region's governor said on Tuesday. The updated toll folds in casualties from strikes over the past several days, as both sides trade some of the heaviest cross-border blows in weeks.

According to the governor, Alexander Shuvaev, two people were killed in an overnight attack, while another man died following an attack that took place on Friday. Reuters, which carried the governor's statement, said it could not independently verify the casualty figures. None of the victims has been publicly identified.

A weekend of heavy strikes

The Belgorod toll caps a grim stretch of long-range attacks. On Friday, Russian strikes killed three people and wounded at least eight across Ukraine, officials said, hitting residential areas in the Zaporizhzhia region, a target in western Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk, and warehouse facilities in Bucha in the Kyiv region. The Associated Press reported that the escalating Russian bombardments had killed more than 50 people over the preceding three days.

The same day, a Ukrainian attack on Russia's Belgorod region killed two people, with the regional governor at the time reporting that 12 people had been wounded in Ukrainian strikes. Russia's defence ministry said its air defences had downed more than 500 Ukrainian drones between late Thursday and early Friday.

Winter pressure ahead

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Moscow is likely to escalate its daily attacks as winter approaches, keeping pressure on Ukraine's energy system. He held a meeting with military officials and government members on Friday focused on energy and air defence needs, saying on Telegram that damage to the power grid and electricity transmission facilities was being repaired around the clock.

The two countries remain locked in a long-range aerial war while their armies stay largely deadlocked on the front line, more than four and a half years since Moscow's full-scale invasion began.
