President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order formally replacing the term "artificial intelligence" with "Super Intelligence" across the US federal government, declaring the technology "much bigger than the internet."
The order, titled "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence," directs all federal departments and agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents and other non-statutory materials — and to stop acknowledging the terms "artificial intelligence" and "AI" in those settings.
What the order requires
The terminology change applies "to the maximum extent permitted by law." It is not retroactive: existing regulations, government contracts, grants and historical archival records will not be altered because of the directive.
For the order's purposes, "Super Intelligence" and "SI" mean "the technologies and systems encompassed by the term 'artificial intelligence' as defined in section 9401(3) of title 15, United States Code."
The order also directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to propose a federal definition of "Super Intelligence" and "SI" reflecting the "continuously advancing technological frontier," and to submit proposed legislative language within 60 days to establish the new term in federal law.
Why the White House says the name matters
According to the White House fact sheet, the United States is the world leader in the field and the federal government should use a name reflecting its full promise. The name "Super Intelligence," it said, conveys the true capabilities of the technologies being developed — "unlocking new forms of human creativity and empowering Americans to achieve what was previously impossible — not simply imitating or automating human intelligence as is implied by the term 'Artificial Intelligence.'"
Trump announced the move after hosting a White House luncheon with leading technology executives, including Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. "Artificial Intelligence is like fake news," Trump told reporters. "This is why the SI, Super Intelligence, is — they're saying — bigger than the industrial revolution, far bigger than the internet, not even close."
The signing came on the same day the tech chiefs joined Trump to sign a voluntary, "morally binding" AI safety accord, and days after Trump first pitched the rename in his address to the UN General Assembly.
