At least two people were killed and 35 others injured in a mass shooting at a block party in Vienna, Georgia, early Sunday, state law enforcement officials said.
Gunfire erupted on Pine Street at around 1:25 a.m. on October 4, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said in a statement. Dooly County Sheriff's Office deputies who were patrolling the gathering responded immediately and found multiple people who had been shot, including two who were pronounced dead at the scene.
Chaos at the gathering
More than 1,000 people had gathered for the block party, held as part of homecoming weekend festivities. More than 50 shots were fired at two locations about a block apart, authorities said. Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls said the two men killed were aged 20 and 23; they have not been publicly identified while the investigation continues.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said some victims were hit by gunfire and others were hit by vehicles as people scrambled to flee. "Even while we were on scene, there was still gunfire about a block away," Peavy told reporters. "While all of us were on scene trying to get attention, medical attention, to the ones that needed it."
The 35 injured were transported to multiple regional hospitals, the GBI said.
Investigation under way
The GBI said it is assisting local authorities with the investigation. GBI Special Agent in Charge Jerry Jones told reporters the bureau was not yet prepared to identify a suspect or suspects, but asked anyone who was at the scene to come forward. No motive has been identified.
The Dooly County School System superintendent clarified that the gathering was not a school-sponsored event. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
