Sony-owned anime platform Crunchyroll has launched its Crunchyroll Manga reading service in India, bringing more than 250 English-language manga titles to Indian readers as part of a new premium membership.
The launch, announced on Thursday, October 8, by Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini at the company's inaugural Anime Future Forum in New York, marks the platform's first major manga push in India.
What readers get
The service offers more than 250 titles from publishers including J-Novel Club, Square Enix and Yen Press, among them The Apothecary Diaries, My Dress-Up Darling, Delicious in Dungeon and Bocchi the Rock!. Action titles from VIZ Media are expected to follow.
In India, manga is bundled into a new "Ultimate Fan" membership priced at Rs 299 a month or Rs 999 a year, combining anime streaming and manga reading across up to six devices. The service is powered by Link-U Group of Japan, in which Crunchyroll recently took a minority stake.
A global rollout
India is one of 11 new English-speaking markets for the service, alongside the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. The move comes as anime fandom in India has grown rapidly, and the company says a large majority of Indian anime fans also read digital manga each month.
