The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth nearly Rs 661 crore for the procurement of the BrahMos fire control system and launchers for Indian Navy ships, in a move aimed at sharpening the fleet's maritime strike capabilities.
The contract was signed on Tuesday, October 6, in New Delhi. The fire control systems and launchers will equip Navy warships with the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile, one of the fastest in its class and a long-standing pillar of India's naval firepower.
Naval modernisation in focus
The deal fits into the Navy's ongoing modernisation drive, which has seen new frontline warships, including the first fleet support ship launched at Visakhapatnam's Hindustan Shipyard, join the fleet in recent weeks. Strengthening ship-borne precision strike capacity remains a priority as the maritime security environment in the Indian Ocean region grows more complex.
What the deal covers
The package covers the fire control system that manages target acquisition, launch sequencing and guidance hand-off for the BrahMos missile, along with the physical launcher assemblies that will be integrated onto naval platforms. The contract value of about Rs 661 crore makes it one of the notable domestic defence signings of the week.
