FIR Registered Against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Over Akashvani Bhawan Entry During INDIA Bloc Protest

Delhi Police on Wednesday registered a First Information Report against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other INDIA bloc MPs, for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhavan premises without permission during Tuesday's protest march towards the Election Commission headquarters.

The case caps a dramatic day in the capital in which the opposition's march was stopped, a nine-hour standoff unfolded inside the national broadcaster's compound, and around 250 people were detained.

According to Delhi Police, the INDIA bloc had planned to march from the Parliament House complex to Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission's headquarters, to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police said no permission had been sought or granted for the march, and the protesters were stopped on Parliament Street.

Several opposition MPs then staged a sit-in at the spot. According to reports, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders subsequently entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises and continued their protest there, sitting under a tree and refusing to leave until a delegation of MPs was allowed to meet Election Commission officials.

Detained and released

Police said they eventually intervened to maintain law and order. Around 250 people, including dozens of MPs, were detained and taken to the New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp. The detained leaders were released later in the night, after 10 pm on Tuesday.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra climbed over a gate at the Kingsway Camp facility, where Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders were being held, according to reports, as Congress workers also gathered there.

The protest was organised by opposition parties over allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

The treason remark

During the standoff, Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had "hijacked" the country with the help of the Chief Election Commissioner through "vote chori", and asserted that action would be taken against them for committing "treason".

The BJP dismissed the march, with Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan calling it another attempt to relaunch Rahul Gandhi and accusing the Congress of trying to spread anarchy.
