"Godzilla Minus Zero," Toho's latest entry in the legendary monster franchise, held its premiere on Saturday at the New York Film Festival — and made franchise history as the first Godzilla film ever to receive an R rating.

Director Takashi Yamazaki, who returned after helming the Oscar-winning 2023 hit "Godzilla Minus One," told a festival press conference that a sequel had already been in motion from the 2023 film's opening day. The new film picks up two years after the original, with Godzilla — surprise — still alive.

First R rating in 70 years

Across 39 films and more than seven decades, no Godzilla movie had carried an R rating before. "Minus Zero" earned it for "some violent content/bloody images," a step up that reflects the film's unflinching depiction of war's aftermath: bloodied victims and burned bodies following both monster attacks and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The rating deepens the series' longstanding identity as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, a theme Yamazaki said he wanted to trace "all the way back" to the 1954 original.

Defying fan theories

Yamazaki said he paid close attention to internet speculation so he could do the opposite. Fans had theorized that Noriko, the girlfriend of protagonist Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), might become the next kaiju after a black mark appeared on her neck at the end of "Minus One." "That's the one thing we're not going to do," Yamazaki quipped. Star Minami Hamabe said she was relieved, recalling she had texted the director asking whether she would become a kaiju.

What "Minus Zero" means

The director also decoded the title: in mathematics, a minus before zero describes approaching the number zero. "This family is headed toward, approaching, this limit of zero — like going back to neutral," he explained. And despite the trailer's claim that "everything ends here," Yamazaki left the door open to a third film, joking that "Minus One" and "Minus Zero" make the naming scheme for any sequel a puzzle.

"Godzilla Minus Zero" arrives in theaters on November 6.
