Google Is Paying Around 100 Publishers for Content Used in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini

Google has begun paying roughly 100 publishers based on how much their content contributes to answers generated by its artificial intelligence products, according to reporting by The Information — a notable reversal for a company that long argued publishers were compensated through search traffic.

The Information reported on Tuesday (September 29) that the pilot covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini chatbot. Payments vary dramatically: smaller sites have received less than $1,000 over several months, while one early participant has earned more than $1 million in a year. Google has been testing the programme for less than a year. Participating publishers see an "AI earnings" widget inside Search Console, though several told The Information they still do not know exactly how payments are calculated. Notably, opting out of the payment does not stop Google from using a site's content in its AI features.

Why the shift matters

AI Overviews have sharply reduced the referral traffic Google sends to websites, drawing complaints and lawsuits from publishers. The European Commission opened an antitrust investigation in December 2025 into how Google uses publisher content for AI features, and Penske Media sued in September 2025 over lost revenue. Larger publishers are reportedly holding out of the pilot, hoping to pressure Google and other AI companies to pay more.

A new economics for the web

The pilot is the first real signal that Google is testing a monetization path for the traffic its AI answers absorb. One participating publisher executive told The Information that Google appears to be testing a model in which it uses publishers' content and determines for itself what that content is worth. If the experiment grows into a broad compensation framework, it could reshape the economics connecting search engines, AI assistants, news organisations and independent websites.
