Google has brought its newest wearable to India, and it has no screen. The Fitbit Air, described as Google's smallest and lightest Fitbit tracker yet, launched in the country on Wednesday at Rs 13,999.

The device goes on sale in India from October 2 at the Google Store and through retail partners including Flipkart, Croma, Reliance Digital and Vijay Sales. In the United States, the same tracker sells for $99 — roughly Rs 8,600 — making the Indian price markedly higher.

A pebble with no display

The Fitbit Air is built around a compact, interchangeable "pebble" module with no display at all. Health data and insights are delivered through the Google Health app on the user's phone rather than on the wrist.

Despite the missing screen, the feature list is full: round-the-clock heart rate monitoring, heart rhythm monitoring with alerts for irregular rhythm (atrial fibrillation), blood oxygen saturation, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages and duration, and automatic activity detection.

Google claims up to seven days of battery life on a single charge, with five minutes of charging said to provide up to a full day of use.

Launch offers and colour options

The tracker ships with a three-month trial of Google Health Premium. During the launch period, Google is offering Rs 1,000 cashback on select HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank cards. Four colour options are available: Obsidian, Berry, Lavender and Fog.

The screen-less design is a clear bet that buyers will trade a display for a lighter, less obtrusive device — and accept the higher Indian price for it.
