Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a "productive discussion" with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer towards the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial interim trade agreement between India and the US, the minister said on Thursday.
Goyal met Greer in Milwaukee on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting. In a post on X, the minister said the two sides discussed the early conclusion of an interim agreement under the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, and also exchanged views on G20 deliberations under the US presidency of the grouping.
The meeting came on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation to review progress in bilateral cooperation across trade, defence, energy, critical technologies, and other areas of mutual interest.
India and the US announced in February that they had finalised the framework for the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement. However, subsequent changes in the US tariff landscape led to further negotiations on the pact.
On September 24, Goyal had said the trade pact was "done and dusted" and would be executed once the United States gives India the right competitive advantage over its rivals in the American market, which include ASEAN countries, China, and Bangladesh.
The Milwaukee meeting signals fresh momentum in the long-running negotiations, with both sides pushing to close the interim deal.
