The Indian Olympic Association will elect its new Executive Council on December 5, five days before the current committee's term ends, and has kick-started the process by appointing former election commissioner Sanjay Kumar Srivastava as the returning officer to oversee the polls.

The IOA announced the schedule on Saturday, describing the elections as a landmark exercise in transparency for the national Olympic body.

Governance in focus

IOA president PT Usha called the elections an important milestone in the organisation's efforts to strengthen good governance. "Our objective is to build strong, credible and athlete-centric institutions, fully aligned with the Olympic Charter and the national sports governance framework," Usha was quoted as saying in a press release.

She added that appointing an experienced former election commissioner as the electoral officer underlined the IOA's commitment to an independent, transparent and credible process.

Srivastava is a retired IAS officer who has served as the Chief Election Commissioner of Delhi and Chandigarh.

Roadmap to the polls

The electoral process will also cover the IOA Athletes' Commission for the 2026-2030 term, with polling, counting and declaration of results scheduled for November 3. National sports federations must nominate two athlete representatives through their athletes' commissions by 2 pm on October 11. The commission will comprise 10 elected athletes — five men and five women.

Usha took charge as IOA president on December 10, 2022, after being elected unopposed — becoming the first woman in the organisation's history to head the national Olympic body.

The governance push comes as India pursues its ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad. India is among seven interested parties in dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, alongside Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Turkey.
