Iranian officials said on October 1 that Tehran has received an official US response to its latest proposal to end the seven-month war, days after US President Donald Trump publicly rejected the Iranian offer.
According to the state-run IRNA news agency, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented the US response to President Masoud Pezeshkian at a Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said. "We will make every effort to bring the agreement to fruition and will firmly stand up for the rights of the Iranian people," Pezeshkian said. "The agreement must now be based on a win-win strategy."
Iranian officials did not disclose what the response contained or whether it amounted to a rejection.
What the proposal covers
Tehran's proposal, floated by Araghchi last week, would see Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if Washington lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, releases frozen Iranian assets and waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales, among other conditions. Trump publicly rejected the offer, saying its terms "would not be acceptable."
Mediation continues
The Cabinet meeting followed Araghchi's return from New York, where he travelled for last week's UN General Assembly. Iranian officials held indirect talks with US officials on the sidelines and also met with Qatari and Pakistani mediators. Araghchi briefed the Cabinet on the trip, including Iran's conditions for reopening the strait, which Mohajerani said had been conveyed through mediators.
Separately, Reuters reported via The Times of Israel that Qatari mediators briefed Araghchi on the US response when he stopped in Doha on his way home from New York, and that while the two sides largely agree on the steps needed, they still disagree on the order in which to take them.
