Israel Strikes Gaza on Oct 7 Anniversary; Five Reported Killed, Palestinian Officials Say

As Israel marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks, Israeli forces carried out new strikes across Gaza on Wednesday, with Palestinian officials reporting five people killed.

What happened

Al-Shifa hospital said two people were killed in an overnight strike in Gaza City. Gaza's civil defence identified one of them as Mohamed Tamous, whom it described as a volunteer for the agency. The Israeli military said it struck and killed two Hamas militants as they exited Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, claiming one had planted explosives near the "Yellow Line" and identifying Tamous as a Hamas military-wing sniper who also worked for civil defence — an account the civil defence agency disputes.

In Khan Yunis, Nasser Hospital said a 60-year-old man, Hisham Ibrahim Abu Mustafa, was killed in an Israeli strike and others were injured. The hospital also reported Ziad Zaarab killed in an airstrike south of Khan Yunis, while an afternoon strike on a tent in the Al-Buraq camp killed another person.

Wider context

The strikes came as commemorations were held at sites including the Nova music festival grounds. A US-brokered ceasefire has been in effect since October 2025. Gaza's health ministry says Israeli forces have killed more than 1,460 people since the ceasefire and over 74,200 since the war began; Israel says it controls about 60% of Gaza.

The conflicting accounts of who the dead were — civil-defence volunteer versus Hamas militant, in Tamous's case — underline how difficult it remains to establish a settled picture of the casualties. All figures in this article come from the official and hospital sources quoted above; none is presented as independently verified beyond that attribution.
