DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has revealed he is already writing his next film, even as the edit of his Superman sequel comes together. Answering a fan's question on Threads about whether he was ready to start on a new movie, Gunn replied, "Already in it. I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!"
The exchange, reported by Variety and Deadline, also confirmed that the assembly cut of "Superman: Man of Tomorrow" is complete. Gunn wrapped principal photography on the sequel in August, and the film is set for a July 9, 2027 theatrical release. He has not named the project he is now writing.
"Man of Tomorrow" picks up the story of Gunn's 2025 Superman relaunch, with David Corenswet returning as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan back as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor is forced into an uneasy alliance with Superman against a bigger menace — the superintelligent villain Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
The returning ensemble also includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Milly Alcock comes back as Kara Zor-El after leading this summer's "Supergirl", and Aaron Pierre makes his big-screen debut as John Stewart, the Green Lantern he also portrays in HBO Max's "Lanterns" series.
Gunn has run DC Studios alongside Peter Safran since 2022, overseeing the Chapter 1 "Gods and Monsters" slate. With Warner Bros. Discovery now being absorbed by Paramount and David Ellison expected to keep the DC leadership in place, the early start on a new script signals Gunn intends to keep steering the franchise.
