Prime Video has released the first full trailer for "Madden," David O. Russell's biopic of the late NFL coach, broadcaster and video-game namesake John Madden, starring Nicolas Cage in a prosthetics-heavy transformation and Christian Bale as longtime Raiders owner Al Davis.
From sideline to broadcast booth
The roughly two-minute preview, released Thursday, traces Madden's arc from the Oakland Raiders sideline to his second life as football's most recognizable television voice to the creation of the Madden NFL video game franchise that made his name a household brand.
Bale's Davis delivers what has already become the trailer's signature line: "There's only one John Madden. They didn't make another one." The footage moves through the Raiders years, a health scare that pushes Madden out of coaching, and the pitch meeting in which Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins — played by John Mulaney — asks Madden to put his playbook "inside" the software.
Star-studded ensemble
The cast includes Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife Virginia, Sienna Miller as Carol Davis, John Mulaney as EA founder Trip Hawkins, and Shane Gillis. Russell directed and co-wrote the script with Cambron Clark, and reports put the production budget at around $75 million.
The film will open in select theaters on November 11 in a brief awards-qualifying run before streaming globally on Prime Video on November 18. It is rated R for language and runs about 1 hour 50 minutes.
