Manchester City produced a statement performance at Anfield on Sunday, thrashing Liverpool 3-0 to preserve their perfect start to the Premier League season and hand the hosts their first league defeat of the campaign.
Tempers flare early
The contest turned fiery around the 13th minute when Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister and City's Elliot Anderson clashed, drawing players from both sides into a pushing match. Despite the charged atmosphere, the first half ended goalless, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma keeping Liverpool at bay after the restart.
Gravenberch red card turns the tide
The decisive moment came in the 62nd minute when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card and was sent off. City ruthlessly exploited their numerical advantage: Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 65th minute, Jeremy Doku doubled the lead three minutes later, and Rayan Cherki completed the 3-0 win in the 78th minute off a flowing move involving Josko Gvardiol.
City stay top
The result strengthened City's position at the top of the table and marked their first match since the verdict in their Premier League financial case, adding to the charged atmosphere at Anfield.
