MEA Warns Indians Against Joining Russian Armed Forces: "Dangerous Path, Strongly Discouraged"

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a fresh advisory cautioning Indian nationals against accepting offers to join the Russian armed forces, warning of grave risks to life and urging people not to be lured by unverified job offers abroad.

What the advisory says
The ministry said on Wednesday that it continues to receive reports of Indian nationals being recruited into the Russian armed forces. It noted that the government has repeatedly highlighted the risks over the past two years and has advised citizens from time to time to be cautious while pursuing job opportunities abroad.

The MEA said it has come across several instances where individuals have willingly sought offers to join the Russian armed forces, believing they would receive monetary benefits and could later secure their release through the Indian government. "It is reiterated that this is a dangerous path and is strongly discouraged by the Government," the advisory said.

Warning over giving up citizenship
The ministry also flagged instances in which individuals approached Indian authorities to voluntarily give up their Indian citizenship, obtain a Russian passport and subsequently join the Russian armed forces. According to the MEA, some individuals have already taken such steps without consulting Indian authorities after being attracted by temporary monetary benefits.

"The Government advises Indian nationals to refrain from taking such actions," the advisory said, urging citizens to consider the serious consequences and potentially fatal risks involved.

Check agents before signing anything
The ministry cautioned that foreign nationals are being recruited into the Russian armed forces by non-public entities, including voluntary groups, and advised Indians to exercise due diligence before accepting job offers, particularly from agents not registered with the MEA. The government said it remains continuously engaged with the Russian side to ensure the safety, well-being and early discharge of all Indian nationals serving in the Russian armed forces.
